RACING SAILING YACHT

FLUID4ENGINEERING core expertise is Hydro/Aerodynamics for Racing Sailing Yachts. In this field, the Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-stokes (RANS) simulations for full pressure-friction forces and moment are at the base of the design process. Whit our methods, Naval Architects and Designers can investigate with reduced turn-around time and less effective costs hundreds of solutions and optimize the design. Typical investigation are for full scale bare hull and full appended conditions in dynamic sailing attitude up to six degrees of freedom, 6dof (surge, sway, sink, heel, trim, yaw) in flat water or in waves (regular or custom oceanic spectra).

HYDRODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE INVESTIGATIONS

Standard investigations in the design loop are:

  • Hull design and hyrodynamics performace optimization
  • Special hull features (spray rails, chines, interceptors, etc.) design
  • Hull-appendages interaction
  • Appendages optimization and custom design
  • Foil design with laminar/turbulence transition prediction, cavitation inception investigation, spray and ventilation
  • Rudders and daggerboards balance
  • Hull and Appendages Hydro Coefficients for VPP

More complex methods are used for custom projects, including dynamic simulations like:

  • Manouvering ( Gybe, Take-off simulations, etc.)
  • Seakeeping and Seasickness study
  • Greenwater loads
  • Tank/Ballasts sloshing

AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE INVESTIGATIONS

Standard investigations in the design loop are:

  • Sails shapes investigation
  • Sails trim optimization
  • Rigid Wing Sail sections and trim/camber optimization
  • Windage of hulls, decks, and superstructure
  • Occupant safety and comfort
  • Local wind effects
  • Sails Aero Coefficients for VPP

More advanced methods like Large Eddy Simulations (LES) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) can be used to simulate the interaction of different bluff-body shapes on the aerodynamic performance. Special studies for foiling catamarans include:

  • Crew-platform-cockpit interaction
  • Rigid Wing Sail endpalte-platform interaction
  • Pod and Beams interaction with Hulls
  • Full Racing Yacht configuration
